WILLIAM J. FRIEDMAN
MEMBER
William Friedman is a pioneer in several facets of environmental law in New Jersey and has achieved a strong reputation in regulatory compliance matters and litigation relating to solid and hazardous waste management, real estate transactions, toxic torts, air and water pollution control, permitting, wetlands regulations and right-to-know laws. He is adept at leading clients through the regulatory maze of the New Jersey Industrial Site Recovery Act, or "ISRA." He frequently lectures and counsels clients on strategies for successfully navigating through the new New Jersey licensed site remediation professionals program in order to efficiently complete hazardous substances cleanups. He has been particularly successful in negotiating favorable settlements with insurers on environmental claims, often without the need for litigation, and has succeeded in convincing insurers to assume responsibility for numerous hazardous substance site cleanups.
Bill is a leader in the rehabilitation of former industrial "brownfields" sites, and he has supervised the remediation of major redevelopment areas along New Jersey's waterfront. Working with several state agencies, he devised the first Brownfields Redevelopment Agreement that allows developers to receive substantial reimbursement for site closure costs. He has also played leadership roles in litigation of numerous hazardous waste site cleanups and in the defense of multi-party toxic tort cases.
