On November 4, 2020, Governor Murphy signed a law that would ban the use of single-use plastic bags in all stores and food service businesses state-wide as well as single use paper carryout bags in certain large grocery stores. The ban will go into effect on May 4, 2022 and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Acting Commissioner and the Secretary of State made a joint statement to both tout the positive impact the ban hopes to have, as well as to prepare New Jersey’s businesses for this change. Beginning May 4, 2024, there will be additional bans on polystyrene foam products used in the food service industry.
