Senate Bill No. 3301, introduced on February 2, 2026, would require school psychologists and school counselors in New Jersey to complete a mental health first aid training course during their first year of employment and at least once every three years thereafter. The training, which must consist of at least eight hours of instruction, would cover topics such as recognizing signs of mental illness and substance use, risk factors, and intervention strategies for helping students in crisis. The Department of Education, in consultation with the Department of Human Services, would be responsible for establishing or approving the training program.
